Why gross per mile misleads

Gross per mile divides the load rate by loaded miles only. It leaves out the empty miles to get to the pickup, the fuel to run all of them, and the hours you sat at the dock. Two loads with the same gross per mile can leave you very different money for your day.

The formula

Fuel is all your miles, loaded and deadhead, times the price per gallon, divided by your miles per gallon. Net is the load rate minus fuel, tolls and other costs. Net per working hour is that net divided by every hour the load took: driving, waiting and loading or unloading. Net per mile is net divided by all miles, empty ones included. Each result is rounded to the nearest cent.

This is the money one load leaves before your fixed costs, like the truck payment and insurance. To count those, find your fixed costs per month with the cost per mile calculator, divide them by the miles you run in a month, and add that figure, times these miles, to other costs.

How to use it

  1. Enter what the load pays, all in, and the loaded miles from the rate confirmation.
  2. Add the deadhead miles from where you are now to the pickup.
  3. Count every hour: driving, waiting at the shipper and receiver, and loading or unloading.
  4. Put in today's fuel price and the miles per gallon your truck really gets.
  5. Compare net per working hour across loads, not just the rate on the board.

The values in the boxes are examples to show how the math works, not averages for any part of the industry. Your numbers will be different.
